CHRI submitted a joint written statement on the 'Impact of COVID-19 on Contemporary Forms of Slavery', in collaboration with the Commonwealth 8.7 Network, for the 45th Regular Session of the Human Rights Council. Submitted under Agenda Item 3, the statement drew on the experience and expertise of the member organisations of the Commonwealth 8.7 Network working at the frontlines to combat modern slavery and address the devastating impact of COVID-19 on their work. It raised key issues such as the impact of the pandemic on provision of and funding for victim and survivor support services, justice for victims and survivors, the increased vulnerability of migrant workers, and effects on workers' rights and supply chain monitoring. Building upon findings from CHRI's report Eradicating Modern Slavery: An assessment of Commonwealth governments' progress on achieving SDG Target 8.7produced in collaboration with our partners at Walk Free, the statement reiterated the urgent need for governments to take immediate measures to ameliorate the negative effects of the coronavirus pandemic on victims and survivors of modern slavery, and provided policy recommendations for Member States to achieve their commitments to eradicate contemporary forms of slavery by 2030.
