Building Public Demand


With support from Open Society for West Africa (OSIWA) CHRI coordinated the implementation of series of activities aimed at intensifying pressure on Parliament to amend Ghana’s RTI Bill in line with the Coalition’s recommendations before it is passed into law. Some of the activities that have been carried out include:

 

2012 May Day Celebration – the celebration was held in the Sunyani, Brong Ahafo, and Greater Accra regions of Ghana.  

 

2013 May Day Celebration- Prior to the ceremonial day, the Coalition released a statement on the theme of the celebration ‘Pensions: It is your right and responsibility’. The statement was published on May 1, 2013 www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/artikel.php?ID=272691

 

International Right to Know Day Celebrations (2012)was held on Friday September 28 2012 in all the ten regions across the country. The celebration was under the theme “Our Right to Know! An Effective Right to Information Law or None”

 

Submission of Memorandum on the 2013 RTI Bill to Parliamentin December, 2013 CHRI submitted a memo on concerns and recommendations on the draft Bill to the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs (the Committee).  CHRI engaged with selected organizations/bodies to also submit their memo on the Bill to the Committee.   Following the submission, CHRI participated in a meeting with the Committee and other stakeholders to discuss the memo submitted.

Focus Group Discussions/Regional Monitoring - The Coalition through its regional networks embarked on Focus Group Discussions (FGD) on the Bill in the regions.

Capacity Building Workshops on Access to Information for Public Officials – was organised under the theme ‘Records Management; A lifeline to Effective Access to Information’ and aimed at promoting access to information through effective records management.

Capacity Building Training on Access to Information for CSOs - CHRI organized a training aimed at building the capacity of selected Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to seek for information from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
