Project Associate, Police Reforms, CCG Project, Mumbai

The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI), India is an independent, non-partisan, human rights non-governmental organisation working for the practical realisation of human rights. CHRI is looking for a Project Associate to work with the Project Lead of the City Core Group (CCG), Mumbai on specific field study-based and RTI interventions aimed at improving transparency and accountability of the police in Mumbai. This project is supported by the Chhelbhai Dave Police Reforms Project of the Jatashankar T. Pathak Charitable Trust (JTPCT).

Initiated by CHRI, CCG is a network of civil society organizations, lawyers and activists committed to mobilizing around, and improving the police response to violence against women and children, including domestic violence. Under the project, CHRI-CCG monitors police compliance with specific statutory obligations and Supreme Court of India’s directives for police reform and better protection of fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution. We also assist aggrieved persons especially victims/survivors of gender-based violence to access justice, in the vulnerable communities in Mumbai where CCG Members are active.

Job Description: The Project Associate shall work in close coordination with the Project Lead, and CCG Mumbai and also work closely with the Director and the team based in Delhi on project activities. Main responsibilities include:

  • Working with the CCG group -  coordinating, communicating, supporting, connecting and following-up with Members
  • Setting up regular meetings and capacity building sessions for the group
  • Coordinating all the research and advocacy activities under the project on a day-to-day basis
  • Initiating and following-up on the field studies to be conducted under the project
  • Engaging with CCG Members and volunteers conducting the field studies and contributing to the background research
  • Ensuring that the RTI interventions under the project are made and followed up in a timely manner
  • Collating information and data from project activities and RTI interventions
  • Undertaking impact documentation of the interventions made by CCG Members
  • Ensuring proper documentation of the overall project activities and
  • Preparing progress reports as and when required

Qualifications:

  • Post graduate degree in law, criminology, social sciences or related fields;
  • 2 - 5 years relevant work experience
  • Excellent research (particularly online) and analytical skills
  • Ability to work with data – compilation, analysis, visualization
  • Excellent drafting, writing and communications skills in English and Marathi. Working knowledge of Hindi is essential.
  • Proven ability to work with a high degree of initiative and creativity
  • Excellent computer skills, including word processing and social media outreach
  • Enthusiastic and willing to explore new areas of knowledge related to police functioning
  • Strong sense of commitment to work
  • Experience of researching / working on issues related to the criminal justice system and policing would be an advantage. Experience of using RTI for research would be welcome.

Salary: Remuneration will be commensurate with knowledge and experience levels.

Type of Appointment and duration: one year contract with a 1 month probation period. The contract may be extended beyond one year based on performance.
