JAIL MAIL- Lessons learnt from the Pandemic: Ensure Right to Adequate Healthcare in Prisons

In this Jail Mail, we analyse the response of Indian prisons in ensuring the right to adequate healthcare  during the pandemic. We look at specific  examples of where states failed to take  affirmative action as well as some good practices. We also enumerate the lessons learnt and outline areas for prioritisation by state governments and prison departments.

This note is a quantitative assessment of the status of compliance by states and union territories with the Supreme Court directives on police reforms on paper (as provided for in the Police Act or the government order).This note grades the states/UTs on compliance based on a set of specific parameters for each directive. It does not address implementation on the ground.
