In a surprise move the Maldivian government announced it would quit the Commonwealth, the Maldives Independent has reported. Just under a month ago the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative submitted a highly critical report on the Maldives to the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, the  watchdog group of the international body.
