May 25, 2018

Fact-finding (May 2017)

CHRI was part of a national fact-finding organised by the National Campaign for Dalit Human Rights (NCDHR) to assess the situation in the aftermath of caste violence that took place on 5th May 2017 in Shabbirpur village of Saharanpur district, Uttar Pradesh. The fact finding was conducted over two days (14-15 May 2017) to get a clear picture of what transpired during the violence and to assess the extent of damage. The team suggested recommendations for action based on the findings. You can read the fact finding report here.

Status update (May 2018)

CHRI and NCDHR held a joint briefing for the press in Lucknow on 19 May 2018 to present an update of the status of police investigation into the atrocities cases in Shabbirpur, one year on. This aimed to assess police compliance with the procedures laid down in the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989, particularly with standards on police investigation. We circulated a briefing note (English and Hindi) which highlights critical gaps and delay in police investigation.
