Jail Mail - Riots in Varanasi Jail : A Sequel

Four riots in jails in Uttar Pradesh over the last of couple months speak of a penal system under strain, crying for a human overhaul.  Maja Daruwala, Director of Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, writes in her article in the Outlook titled “Number 57 Said To Number 3” that the conditions that led to prison riots in Varanasi and elsewhere exist in every state.

The study looks at the implementation of various NALSA & SLSA directives for ensuring access to legal aid services in correctional homes. The study examines the responses received from 39 correctional homes in West Bengal and provides an account of the legal aid services available at correctional homes in each of the 20 districts of West Bengal.
