CHRI in Commonwealth discussion on growing pressures on the media

April 11th saw an all star lineup for a panel discussion 'In defence of free media: What can the Commonwealth do?' at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, London.
 
The panelists included Sanjoy Hazarika, International Director , Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative ,  Akbar Khan, Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, HE Euripides L Evriviades, High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus, and Kayode Soyinka, Editor-in-Chief, Africa Today Magazine.
 
Mr Hazarika, in his speech, claimed that the "entire universe of free expression under threat today, not just media". In elaborating on the four principles for media governance - Greater collaboration, cooperation between CSOs and media, use of innovative laws such as Right to Information and being open to review and scrutiny ourselves, he concluded by saying "change doesn't come from outside, it comes from within".
