The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI), an independent international NGO based in New Delhi, India, is mandated to ensure the practical realisation of human rights in Commonwealth countries. It was founded in 1987 in London by five Commonwealth professional bodies: The Commonwealth Lawyer's Association, the Commonwealth Legal Association, the Commonwealth Medical Association, the Commonwealth Trade Unions Council and the Commonwealth Journalists Association. The Commonwealth Parliamentarians Association joined in 1996. These founding bodies are represented in the Trustee Committee. In addition to its International Advisory Commission, its policy-setting body, an India-based Executive Committee oversees its day to day functioning.

CHRI's objectives are to promote awareness of and adherence to international and domestic human rights instruments and declarations. Its constituent groups ensure that CHRI has both a national presence and local network in each country in which it works. Human rights education and advocacy is at the core of its work.
