Chennai Judicial Exchange
on Access to Justice

Around 30 District judges from across Tamil Nadu met for two days to discuss ongoing challenges to ensuring access to justice and human rights. They focused on the impact of poverty and discrimination in denying justice to the poor and marginalised sections of the community.

Eminent jurists, academics and lawyers from India and abroad contributing to the deliberations included: Justice J.S. Verma, former Chief Justice of India and former Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission of India; Justice C.V. Wigneswaran, former Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka; Dato' Param Cumaraswamy, Vice President, International Commission of Jurists and former United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers; Justice K.T. Thomas, former Judge of the Supreme Court of India and Prof. SP Sathe, Hon. Director of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Pune.

The meeting was convened by the Hon'ble High Court of Madras. It was facilitated by the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) and INTERIGHTS, and held from 5-7 November 2004 at the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy in Chennai.
