At a time when demands are being raised from across the country to repeal the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), The Wire takes a look at how the issue was first debated in the Constituent Assembly of India and the circumstances that led to the controversial law’s adoption.

The information has been obtained from parliament’s library by Venkatesh Nayak, coordinator of the Access to Information Programme of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative. Nayak said: “The purpose of placing these debates in the public domain is to enable people to debate the issue in an informed manner with knowledge of the concerns of lawmakers in the past.” More
