CHOGM 2001/2002: Coolum, Australia

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) originally scheduled for October 2001 in Brisbane was held in Coolum, Queensland, Australia between 2nd - 5th March 2002.

CHOGM was postponed because of the September 11th terrorist attacks that took place in Washington, D.C. and New York. The Commonwealth Foundation carried on with the Commonwealth People’s Festival (“CPF”) which provided space for civil society organizations from across the Commonwealth to interact and network on various issues of concern to the Commonwealth. CHRI was an active participant in the CPF which began on 2nd October 2001 and concluded on October 5th, 2001.

CHRI launched its report to CHOGM entitled – “Human Rights and Poverty Eradication – A Talisman for the Commonwealth”. This report was produced by the International Advisory Commission of CHRI, chaired by Professor Margaret Reynolds. This report focuses on poverty eradication and treats poverty as a serious human rights violation. It holds national governments and international institutions accountable for the continued existence of poverty and calls for a rights based approach to the complete eradication of poverty.
