The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative is a non-partisan independent international non-governmental organisation. Human rights education and advocacy are at the core of all CHRI's activities, and the aims and ends of its reports and investigations.

CHRI was born out of an awareness that although Commonwealth countries have shared legal principles and values, little had been done to set human rights standards within the association itself or to promote a culture of human rights.

CHRI aims to raise awareness of and adherence to internationally recognised human rights instruments and declarations made by Commonwealth Heads of Governments, and most particularly those embodied in the Harare Principles.

CHRI New Delhi Office

In New Delhi CHRI runs a small but very busy and committed office of about 35 people. Its arena of work is Commonwealth-wide. It focuses its work on areas of human rights concern that are common to most countries of the Commonwealth. CHRI believes that the presence of both developed and developing countries in this association provides valuable synergies and opportunities for the exchange of ideas and good practices.

CHRI Accra Office

In order to develop human rights interventions particularly appropriate to the context of Africa, in May 2001 CHRI opened a new office in Accra, Ghana. This office co-ordinates programmes that build on CHRI’s current concerns. As a priority, it will work to expand public knowledge of the right to information and advocate for laws and ensure significant participation of civil society in decision-making and the greater accountability of governments.
